About DSHS

Welcome to the DSHS web site. The DSHS website offers links that provide more information about each individual division as well as updates about the many important services administered throughout the state.

Our mission is to promote and protect the safety of people and property in Delaware.

In June 2003, Delaware's General Assembly passed legislation to create the Department of Safety and Homeland Security (DSHS) as a replacement for the former state agency known as the Department of Public Safety. The Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security (DSHS) is committed to protecting the lives and property of our citizens and the visitors to our state. In doing so, DSHS is taking the necessary steps to prepare for all hazards and to protect all citizens.

The Department is comprised of: the Office of the Secretary, the Delaware State Police, the Office of Highway Safety, the Division of Communications, the Delaware Emergency Management Agency, the Capitol Police, the Division of Forensic Science, the Division of Gaming Enforcement, the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement, the Developmental Disabilities Council, and the State Council for Persons with Disabilities. Each of these agencies has a significant role in supporting the DSHS mission.
